Chapter 26

As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

Wie der Schnee im Sommer und Regen in der Ernte, also reimt sich dem Narren die Ehre nicht.

As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

Wie ein Vogel dahinfährt und eine Schwalbe fliegt, also ein unverdienter Fluch trifft nicht.

A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

Dem Roß eine Geißel und dem Esel einen Zaum und dem Narren eine Rute auf den Rücken!

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

Antworte dem Narren nicht nach seiner Narrheit, daß du ihm nicht auch gleich werdest.

He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.

Wer eine Sache durch einen törichten Boten ausrichtet, der ist wie ein Lahmer an den Füßen und nimmt Schaden.

The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

Wie einem Krüppel das Tanzen, also steht den Narren an, von Weisheit zu reden.

As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.

The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

Der Faule spricht: Es ist ein junger Löwe auf dem Wege und ein Löwe auf den Gassen.

As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.

Ein Fauler wendet sich im Bette wie die Tür in der Angel.

The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.

Der Faule verbirgt seine Hand in dem Topf, und wird ihm sauer, daß er sie zum Munde bringe.

The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

Ein Fauler dünkt sich weiser denn sieben, die da Sitten lehren.

He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

Wer vorgeht und sich mengt in fremden Hader, der ist wie einer, der den Hund bei den Ohren zwackt.

As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,

Wie ein Unsinniger mit Geschoß und Pfeilen schießt und tötet,

So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

also tut ein falscher Mensch mit seinem Nächsten und spricht danach: Ich habe gescherzt.

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

Wenn nimmer Holz da ist, so verlischt das Feuer; und wenn der Verleumder weg ist, so hört der Hader auf.

As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

Wie die Kohlen eine Glut und Holz ein Feuer, also facht ein zänkischer Mann Hader an.

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

Die Worte des Verleumders sind wie Schläge, und sie gehen durchs Herz.

Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

Brünstige Lippen und ein böses Herz ist wie eine Scherbe, mit Silberschaum überzogen.

He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;

Der Feind verstellt sich mit seiner Rede, und im Herzen ist er falsch.

When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

Wenn er seine Stimme holdselig macht, so glaube ihm nicht; denn es sind sieben Greuel in seinem Herzen.

Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

Wer den Haß heimlich hält, Schaden zu tun, des Bosheit wird vor der Gemeinde offenbar werden.

Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.

Wer eine Grube macht, der wird hineinfallen; und wer einen Stein wälzt, auf den wird er zurückkommen.

A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

Eine falsche Zunge haßt den, der sie straft; und ein Heuchelmaul richtet Verderben an.
