Chapter 3

After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

Dopo, Giobbe aprì la bocca e maledisse il suo giorno;

And Job spake, and said,

prese a dire:

Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

Perisca il giorno in cui nacqui e la notte in cui si disse: «E' stato concepito un uomo!».

Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

Quel giorno sia tenebra, non lo ricerchi Dio dall'alto, né brilli mai su di esso la luce.

Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

Lo rivendichi tenebra e morte, gli si stenda sopra una nube e lo facciano spaventoso gli uragani del giorno!

As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

Quel giorno lo possieda il buio non si aggiunga ai giorni dell'anno, non entri nel conto dei mesi.

Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.

Ecco, quella notte sia lugubre e non entri giubilo in essa.

Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.

La maledicano quelli che imprecano al giorno, che sono pronti a evocare Leviatan.

Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:

Si oscurino le stelle del suo crepuscolo, speri la luce e non venga; non veda schiudersi le palpebre dell'aurora,

Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.

poiché non mi ha chiuso il varco del grembo materno, e non ha nascosto l'affanno agli occhi miei!

Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

E perché non sono morto fin dal seno di mia madre e non spirai appena uscito dal grembo?

Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

Perché due ginocchia mi hanno accolto, e perché due mammelle, per allattarmi?

For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,

Sì, ora giacerei tranquillo, dormirei e avrei pace

With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;

con i re e i governanti della terra, che si sono costruiti mausolei,

Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:

o con i principi, che hanno oro e riempiono le case d'argento.

Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.

Oppure, come aborto nascosto, più non sarei, o come i bimbi che non hanno visto la luce.

There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.

Laggiù i malvagi cessano d'agitarsi, laggiù riposano gli sfiniti di forze.

There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.

I prigionieri hanno pace insieme, non sentono più la voce dell'aguzzino.

The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

Laggiù è il piccolo e il grande, e lo schiavo è libero dal suo padrone.

Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

Perché dare la luce a un infelice e la vita a chi ha l'amarezza nel cuore,

Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;

a quelli che aspettano la morte e non viene, che la cercano più di un tesoro,

Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

che godono alla vista di un tumulo, gioiscono se possono trovare una tomba...

Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

a un uomo, la cui via è nascosta e che Dio da ogni parte ha sbarrato?

For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.

Così, al posto del cibo entra il mio gemito, e i miei ruggiti sgorgano come acqua,

For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

perché ciò che temo mi accade e quel che mi spaventa mi raggiunge.

I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

Non ho tranquillità, non ho requie, non ho riposo e viene il tormento!
